On July 10, 2025, the United States Department of Education issued a policy that requires all adult education programs receiving federal funding to verify the citizenship or legal residency status of all participants. Because our adult education program is federally funded, we are obligated to comply with these updated guidelines to continue offering services to our students. Effective immediately, clients registering for any of our adult education classes (GED, Digital Literacy, ESL, and most workforce development classes) must provide documentation as prescribed below. Non-federally funded programs such as our parenting classes and school-based initiatives are not affected by this change.
Acceptable forms of citizenship or legal residency status verification include but are not limited to:
· Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program
· REAL ID/Star compliant identification cards/Drivers License
· Alabama Drivers License ("accompanied by U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport" if not STAR compliant)
· U.S. Birth Certificates
· DHS-issued documentation verifying immigration status
· U.S. Passport
· Certificate of U.S. citizenship or naturalization
· Selective Service card
· Alabama Voter Registration card
